ADAMS -- A three-story Victorian home sustained about $20,000 in smoke and water damage yesterday afternoon after a blaze ignited in a hallway window and spread to a nearby bedroom.

Adams Fire Department Assistant Chief David Richardson said 27 firefighters responded to the 4 Orchard St. home owned by Bruce and Laura Dumouchel, after a neighbor, Charlene Briggs of 8 1/2 Orchard St., reported the fire at 12:09 p.m.

There were no reported injuries, and the Dumouchels were not at home at the time of the fire, Richardson said.

According to Richardson, a contracting company was doing some renovation work at the house yesterday. The cause of the fire has not been determined and an investigation is continuing, he said.

The home did not sustain significant structural damage and is habitable, Richardson said.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross were at the scene to provide temporary shelter if necessary, but the homeowners decided to remain in the house, he said.

Firefighters manning four fire engines brought the blaze under control in about 45 minutes and spent about two hours at the scene, Richardson said. Cheshire firefighters provided coverage at the Adams fire station, and members of the Adams Ambulance Service responded to the scene.
