Fire damages local home 10/10/98
Members of the Alert Hose Co. responded to a two alarm
structure fire Saturday night. The fire kept firefighters busy from
7:30 PM to approximately 1:00 AM with a fire watch posted till the following
morning. The blaze apparently was caused by an unattended candle. Parts
of the first and second floor apartments were badly burned with the remainder
of the home incurring heavy smoke damage. Neither resident was hurt in
the blaze.
Demonstration deemed a success 10/8/98
Despite wet weather and a large turnout the previous
night, the demonstration held Thursday at the former Pizza House was well
attended and was deemed another success. Held as part of the Fire
Prevention Week activities, the demonstration showcased the processes involved
with handling a smoky fire scene. The interior of the vacant building was
filled with smoke using hay. Teams of firefighters entered the building
for search and support, while others laddered the building and provided
"ventilation".
Open house well attended 10/7/98
The open house held this past Wednesday was deemed a
great success. Of the estimated 350 visitors, many were enthusiastic youngsters.
While the kids enjoyed climbing on the apparatus and seeing fireman in
full turnout gear, the adults were able to gather informational pamphlets
pertaining to fire safety. Homeowners also received a complimentary smoke
detector and a chance to win one of five fire extinguishers. Steepleview
Realty, South Adams Savings Bank, and Albert's Hardware all donated either
time or materials and should be commended for their help in making this
year's Open house one of the best!
